He knows that it cannot happen, and change is all around us, but he cannot face the fact that even he is changing. Wants to save all the kids from falling. But in reality he doesnt want to save them from falling and dying, he actually is trying to convey that he wants kids to not go through what he is going through. He wants the kids to not fall to his level. He wants to catch them and make them understand there is more to life then Just running. The kids are running, no idea where they are going, Just like Holder was naming the streets, no idea where he was going. Holder is at the cliff himself, trying to stop others from falling like he almost did himself. l had this feeling that Id never get to the other side of the street. I thought Id Just go down, down, down, and nobodys ever see me again. But I kept going. I was sort of afraid to stop, I think (198) Holder was afraid of disappearing, even though he was afraid that he would disappear, he would continue walking. While walking he saw his little brother, and Holder would continuously beg his brother to not let him disappear and eventually thank him. Then the next block came and the same thing happened. Holders past was trying to make him not leave, but Holder kept walking. Eventually, Holder stopped, but was too far. He made the decision to never return back home again. If you had a million years to do it in, you couldnt rub out even half the Buck you signs in the world. Its impossible (202) This shows Holders hatred towards immaturity and how hes grown and changed over the time in the book. Earlier in the book Holder would have simply ignored the signs on the wall, but now he wishes to remove all of the signs of immaturity in the world. Thats the nice thing about carousels, they always play the same songs (210) The fact that carousels always play the same songs reminds Holder of his past, and brings back some of his fond memories of when he was a child. l felt so damn happy all of a sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around It was Just that she looked so damn nice, the way she kept going around and around, in her blue coat and all (213) All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid shed fall off the goddamn horse, but I didnt say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but its bad if you say anything to them (211) Although Holder can be quite unhappy at most times, it seems that he gets much Joy out of his little sister. He really admires his little sister, and seeing her happy is one of the small things that brings him true happiness. Holder believes that the kids should learn on their own, and not be restricted by others without trying themselves.
